This much is rarely disputed.
What is less clear, however, is where the kings were buried. In his Itinerary, the 16th-century antiquarian John Leland recalled that the brothers were buried ‘yn a Place behynd the High Altare of S. Marie Chirch’. John Hutchins, an 18th-century antiquarian, thought it ‘probable these princes were first buried in the porch, and afterwards removed near the high altar’. Indeed, it is entirely possible that the burials were translated when the church was rebuilt, first under Bishop Ælfwold in the mid-11th century, and again under Bishop Roger of Salisbury in the early 12th. Other than these antiquarians’ testimonies, however, both written centuries after the brothers died, there is very little evidence for the kings’ whereabouts today.
It was, therefore, optimistic at best for the vicar of Sherborne in 1925, Reverend Canon Stephen Harold Wingfield Digby, reporting the discovery of a ‘large stone coffin’ to the editor of the Spectator, to consider it ‘highly probable that this is another Royal Tomb’. But whether or not his belief was sincere, due to the precarious finances of an interwar campaign to restore the abbey’s medieval Lady Chapel, the ‘rediscovery of Ethelbert’ – or a similar story – had almost become a necessity to revive support for the scheme.
The Lady Chapel had been sold to Sherborne School after the Dissolution, partially demolished, and the remains then converted into a dwelling for the headmaster in 1560. The idea to ‘restore’ it for worship likely originated in the mid-19th century, and was probably the brainchild of the Tractarian vicar from 1854 to 1868, Reverend Edward Harston. The High Church journal the Ecclesiologist reported on the proposal from 1856, but the first concrete step was taken in 1860 when the local squire, George Wingfield Digby, repurchased the chapel from the school, probably under Harston’s influence. The scheme was abandoned, however, and nothing more was done until 1917, when it was taken up again as a war memorial and commemoration of the anticipated day of peace by Reverend Canon Digby, the then-squire, Major Frederick James Bosworth Wingfield Digby, and the verger, George King. But not everyone was supportive.

By the summer of 1925, £4,000 was still required for the completion of the chapel. It was fortuitous, therefore, that a sarcophagus was discovered by construction workers on 4 June.
Weeks before Reverend Canon Digby’s letter appeared in the Spectator, the story had made international news. The Irish Catholic Herald reported the discovery of ‘a coffin which is supposed to be that of Ethelbert, King of the West Saxons’, and scores of national and regional papers followed suit. Unfortunately, the identification of the sarcophagus as Æthelberht’s had been made without any expert opinion, and the more details that came to light, the harder it became to maintain. The bones inside the sarcophagus, for instance, were evidently those of a man too tall ever to have fitted inside. It also became clear that several medieval sarcophagi, including one believed to be that of Æthelbald, had been found in the abbey throughout the 19th century. Indeed, it is likely that the ‘Ethelbert coffin’ itself was a sarcophagus discovered and reburied in 1801, its conjectured identification with royalty having been publicly denounced at the time.
Nevertheless, echoing the known burial of Ælfred at nearby Winchester, the 1925 find struck a chord with an interwar public still captivated by the landscape and history of ‘ancient Wessex’, popularised, for example, by the novels of Thomas Hardy. First, you can earn up to $20 in statement credits each month after you use the Business Gold Card for eligible U.S. purchases at FedEx, Grubhub, and office supply stores.
Second, you can earn up to $12.95 in statement credits each month after you pay for a monthly Walmart+ membership (subject to auto-renewal) with your Business Gold Card. (Up to $12.95 plus applicable taxes. Plus Ups not eligible.)
I find these statement credits a bit random, and they’re not the most helpful if you have an online business like me. I usually max out on the Grubhub credits though!
Access to Amex Offers
The Business Gold Card also has access to Amex Offers, an ever-changing roster of deals where you can save money or earn bonus points with select retailers. The offers are targeted, so every cardholder has their own unique array of offers at any given time. For these offers, you do have to add them to your card before making a purchase (or you won’t get the deal).
Usually, they’re structured as “spend X, get Y amount back as a statement credit” though sometimes they’ll offer bonus points or a percentage back. While you probably won’t be able to take advantage of most offers, the more you can, the more you can offset the card’s annual fee.
New offers get added as old ones expire, so it’s worth checking back every so often so you can add any offers to your card that you might use.
Who is the Business Gold Card for?
The Business Gold card is best for business owners who have regular spending in the six categories where you can earn 4x points. This card is especially ideal for entrepreneurs who don’t want to worry about rotating or pre-selecting bonus categories. All you have to do is use it for your regular business spending and you’ll get your points.
Like with any card, if you’re carrying a balance — or think you might — you shouldn’t get this one. Travel cards like this come with high interest rates, and the rewards you earn won’t make up for what you’ll lose in interest charges. Trust me, no amount of points is worth going into debt over!
This card is also not for anyone with poor credit, as you need excellent credit to qualify. (If that’s you, check out the best credit cards for improving your score.)
The American Express Business Gold Card is one of my favorite business cards. The ability to automatically earn 4x points on your top two spending categories each month keeps things simple and helps you rack up points quickly. And more points equals more trips.

‘Harmal’ Plant Was Used For Smoking And Inhaling In Arabia As Early As 2,700 Years Ago

The study’s findings provide previously unknown insights into early therapeutic practices in Arabia and demonstrate that native plants were being used for their bio- and psychoactive effects as early as 2,700 years ago.
Led by Barbara Huber (Max Planck Institute for Geoanthropology) and Marta Luciani (University of Vienna), and in collaboration with the Heritage Commission of the Saudi Arabian Ministry of Culture, the researchers used metabolic profiling to examine the organic residues left on the smoking utensils. The utensils were excavated from the Iron Age dwellings of the Qurayyah Oasis in northwestern Saudi Arabia, known since ancient times for its decorated ceramic vessels.

Our findings provide the first chemical evidence for the earliest known burning of harmal, not only in Arabia but worldwide,” says Barbara Huber, co-lead author of the study. “Scientifically, this is an important step, as we can now better understand how these communities combined their medicinal knowledge with the local flora—whether for health care, cleaning and disinfecting spaces, or possibly also for its psychoactive effects.”
The study used high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC MS/MS), a powerful analytical technique that enables the detection of the characteristic alkaloids of rue even in tiny, chemically degraded samples.

“By integrating biomolecular analyses with archaeological methods, we were able to not only identify the type of plants people used at that time, but also why, how, and where they did so,” says Marta Luciani, excavation director in Qurayyah and archaeologist at the University of Vienna. “This allows us a unique insight into botanical practices that were central to life at that time, but are rarely preserved archaeologically.”
Peganum harmala is known for its antibacterial, psychoactive, and therapeutic properties and is still used today in traditional medicine and for fumigation in households in the region. The new findings thus underscore its long-standing cultural and medicinal significance.
“The finds also demonstrate the deep historical roots of traditional medicine and smoking practices in Arabia. Through this collaborative research, we are not only preserving the archaeological artifacts but also contributing to the preservation of intangible cultural heritage—that is, knowledge passed down through generations that is still alive in local communities today,” adds Ahmed M Abualhassan, co-director of the Heritage Commission in the Qurayyah Project.
The significance of the study goes far beyond archaeology and extends to fields such as ethnobotany, medical anthropology, cultural heritage studies, and pharmacognosy, all of which deal with the long-term relationships between people, medicinal plants, and natural resources.

Educating Claudius: Transforming the Family Outcast into the Emperor of Rome
When the mad Roman Emperor Caligula was assassinated in 41 AD, his uncle Claudius ran to one of the palace’s apartments and hid behind a curtain. Claudius was soon discovered by the praetorian guards and escorted to their camp, where he was introduced to the troops who proclaimed him emperor.
Despite being the youngest son of Nero Drusus (brother of Emperor Tiberius) and Antonia the younger (daughter of Mark Antony and Emperor Augustus’ sister Octavia), Claudius was never a front-runner to be the Roman Emperor. Deemed an embarrassment at court due to his poor health and alarming lack of social skills, it was only when Caligula came to power that he was eventually offered a consulship as a colleague to the emperor himself only to be treated horribly by the young emperor and suffer public scorn at court.

Despite his image as the slow-witted member of the imperial family,
Claudius’ initial moves in office were thoughtful and decisive. Though he sentenced Caligula’s assassins to death, he did not launch further investigations on the matter. Instead, he eliminated treason trials, burned criminal records, and destroyed Caligula’s fabled stockpile of poison.

What is the Business Platinum Card® from American Express?
The Business Platinum Card® from American Express is a travel rewards card geared towards business owners. (Remember: even side hustles and freelancing count as businesses so you can get this card even without being an LLC.) First, let’s go over some of the best things you get when you sign up, which make it a no brainer to get for the first year:

Most transfers are instant, though some can take up to 48 hours.
You can also use your Membership Rewards points to book flights and hotels in the Amex Travel portal. I generally wouldn’t do this though as it’s not the best use of your points. It’s always better to transfer them out to one of their partners. However, you can get 35% points back when you do book via their portal so just compare the points costs between both before making a decision.
Breaking Down the Business Platinum’s Credits and Benefits
Amex cards are well-known for their plethora of perks and benefits. They’re a big reason I love their cards. And, if you can take advantage of all that it has to offer, the Business Platinum boasts over $1,700 worth of value. But, with so many categories and so much fine print, it can be hard to keep track of whether a benefit is actually useful for your spending habits. So, to help you decide if the card is right for you, I want to break down some of the major categories of benefits:
Airport Experience Credits (Lounge Access, CLEAR Plus, Global Entry/TSA PreCheck)
One of the best things about this card — and what makes it a standout for frequent travelers — is the unbeatable airport lounge access. You’ll get into some of the top lounges worldwide, including the excellent Centurion Lounges and Delta Sky Clubs (when you’re flying Delta, with up to 10 visits per year).
On top of that, you’ll get complimentary access to the huge Priority Pass network. If having a quiet space to relax, grab a drink, or get some work done is a priority when you travel, this card has you covered pretty much anywhere.
I also appreciate that the Business Platinum helps you get through the airport faster. It offers up to $199 in statement credits each year for a CLEAR® Plus membership, which speeds you through security lines.
You’ll also get a credit for Global Entry (up to $100 every 4 years) or TSA PreCheck (up to $85 every 4.5 years), depending on which one you choose. I personally recommend going for Global Entry. It takes a little more effort (there’s an interview), but it includes TSA PreCheck too. It’ll save you a ton of time if you travel internationally.
Airline and Hotel Credits
Another travel-related benefit is the up to $200 airline credit. Unfortunately, it comes with a fair number of restrictions, making this credit a bit more annoying to use. It can only be used on one (pre-selected) airline, and you can only use it for incidentals, not airfare. But if you don’t have an airline credit card that offers free baggage, it can be useful to have. You can also use the credit for airline expenses like paid seat selection or on-board food and drink.
The Business Platinum also offers a few Hilton-related benefits. First, you can receive up to $200 in statement credits at Hilton properties when booked directly. Since these credits are distributed in quarterly $50 increments, you’d have to stay in a Hilton property at least four times a year to get the full value of this credit. But if you’re on the road a lot, that can be easy to do.
Second, the Business Platinum offers complimentary Hilton Honors™ Gold Status (as well as Marriott Bonvoy® Gold Elite status), which offer extra perks and benefits when staying at these properties.
Business-Related Statement Credits
The Business Platinum card comes with some great perks to help lighten the financial load of running a business. Expenses can really add up if you’re managing a business while traveling, so I appreciate that the Business Platinum helps offset these costs.
You can get up to $400 in statement credits on U.S. Dell purchases (through June 30, 2025, split into $200 chunks every six months). There’s also up to $360 back per year on Indeed ads (up to $90 each quarter), which is great if you’re hiring as your business grows.
If you use Adobe tools, there’s a $150 credit available when you prepay annually for eligible Adobe Creative Cloud or Acrobat Pro plans for teams. And to keep you connected on the go, you’ll get up to $120 a year for purchases made directly with U.S. wireless providers — that’s $10 back each month.
Amex Offers
On top of all those valuable statement credits, the Business Platinum gives you access to Amex Offers, an easy way to save some cash or rack up extra points with a wide range of retailers. These deals rotate regularly and are personalized, so what shows up for you might be totally different from what another cardholder sees. Most of the time, it’s a simple setup like “spend X, get Y back.” I always check Amex Offers before I purchase. (The personal card offers this too.)
The Business Platinum’s Travel Insurance
The Business Platinum also comes with great travel insurance. While I still recommend buying a standalone policy for medical, this card includes strong built-in coverage like trip delay, trip cancellation, emergency evacuation, and medical transport. It also includes cell phone protection for damage or theft, a rare but valuable perk. For a maximum of $800 per claim, with a limit of two approved claims per 12-month period, when your cell phone line is listed on a wireless bill and the prior month’s wireless bill was paid by an Eligible Card Account. A $50 deductible will apply to each approved claim.
So, while you could get away with the card’s insurance if you book the trip on the card, I wouldn’t rely on it completely. But it’s better than most!
Should you get this card?
The Business Platinum is ideal for frequent travelers who can make the most of perks like smoother airport experiences and hotel elite status. If you can take advantage of a few of the business-related statement credits, the statement credits alone make the high annual fee worth it. I get a lot of value from the card through the statement credits that make carrying the card after the first year really worth it.
While it’s true you only get 1x point per dollar spent on anything under $5,000 (which isn’t as good as many other cards), the points back on redemptions and the tons of statement credits, elite status, Amex offers, and partners you don’t find anywhere else make this card essential for any business owner.

‘Hitler’s Deserters’ by Douglas Carl Peifer review
In 1989, as the Berlin Wall was about to fall, Turkish sculptor Mehmet Aksoy was completing his ‘Memorial for the Unknown Deserter’. Originally designed for Freedom Square in the West German capital Bonn it was placed, instead, at Unity Square in Potsdam, formerly in East Germany, in 2001. The sculpture, carved from Carrara marble, depicts an absence: in the centre of a large, rock-like formation is a human-figure-shaped hole outlining the space where a soldier might have stood. Douglas Carl Peifer’s work, Hitler’s Deserters, tells the story of men who similarly absented themselves from active duty in the German Wehrmacht during the Second World War. Since the precise number of those who committed this ‘crime’ cannot be known, Peifer’s focus is on those who were prosecuted for it. Military courts and tribunals sentenced an estimated 18-20,000 German soldiers, sailors, and airmen to death for desertion, ‘subversion of the military spirit’, and treason. Peifer recounts their possible motivations for evading military service and the paths taken to do so. It is a well-told tale, one that manages to humanise the victims of Nazi military justice and embed their individual narratives in a thorough examination of the world at war.
Peifer’s foremost contribution to the study of desertion in the Third Reich is bringing existing scholarship written in German to an English-speaking audience. This is the first comprehensive, academically rigorous English language account by a professional historian (a book with the same title was published in 2013 by a former conscript in the Swedish Air Force, but it was a popular history lacking references). Peifer has also carried out his own extensive research in the archives, making notable use of the Swiss Federal Archives in Bern, since neutral Switzerland was a key destination for many fleeing the Nazi war machine.
The book is well structured and accessible for the non-Wehrmacht-specialist, and readers not well versed in exactly what constituted Nazi-era military ‘justice’. Peifer outlines the military penal code and special wartime criminal laws that dictated how deserters were to be treated; the ideological obsession – shared between Wehrmacht officers and Hitler himself – with avoiding the spectre of an imagined ‘stab in the back’ (of the type allegedly suffered by Germany in 1918); and the contours of what Peifer calls a ‘politicized military leadership’ that propped up the Wehrmacht as a pillar of the Nazi state. The most poignant chapters, however, are those that humanise Hitler’s deserters by, in Peifer’s words, ‘putting a face to the numbers’.
These recount the experiences of eight men who dodged serving under the swastika. Among them is Wilhelm Hanow, who surrendered to authorities two and a half years after going missing from his unit, hidden by a brave wife who herself faced charges for aiding and abetting a deserter. Hanow was guillotined in May 1943. Ludwig Metz crossed the border into Switzerland, where he was questioned by the Swiss Military Intelligence Service, resulting in an unusually rich reconstruction of his path to, and motivations for, desertion. Stefan Hampel, born to a German mother and a Polish father, had contact with a Polish-Lithuanian resistance group while on the run from his unit. His sentence of 15 years of heavy labour was ‘little more than an extended death sentence’; incredibly he escaped from the labour camp only to be taken prisoner by the Soviets. Although, as Peifer rightly points out, there was no ‘typical deserter’, these short biographies highlight a factor that appears to have increased the likelihood of a death sentence in German military trials: the deserter’s supposedly ‘asocial personality’. Peifer thereby reveals just how inextricably intertwined military judicial ‘logic’ and Nazi ideological hatreds were.
The lengthy sections about why the vast majority of German soldiers continued to serve seem less necessary. Information about the ideological training provided by the Hitler Youth, contemporary notions of masculinity, and of comradeship are not entirely out of place, but this is well-trod terrain. Peifer might have been wiser to focus solely on who said no and why, rather than on the ongoing yeses. There are also some errors: Hitler was imprisoned at Landsberg not Landshut, President Paul von Hindenburg becomes Erich von Hindenburg and in some places is misspelled Hindenberg.
Despite this, Peifer deftly categorises the various motivations for desertion, emphasising that war weariness, fear, homesickness, and family issues topped the list, while moral reservations and political motives were much less frequent. Having these findings now available in English is a real service to scholarship on the Third Reich, and Peifer’s book goes further by examining the debates about the role of the deserter in postwar public memory in both Germanys. Maligned by many veterans as a traitor and a coward but later heralded as a hero and even a resister by peace activists, the German soldier who broke his oath to Hitler has been a polarising figure for decades.
That debate continues, playing out not only in academic publications and parliamentary debates but in public spaces. In 2009 in Cologne, a new ‘deserter memorial’ was unveiled, the Memorial for the Victims of NS Military Justice. Words made of metal form a shelter-like structure. They articulate a clear position on the controversial figure Peifer so skilfully depicts. They equate the deserter with a resister who ‘refused to shoot’, ‘refused to kill’, ‘refused to torture’, ‘refused to denounce’, ‘refused to brutalise’, ‘refused to discriminate’, and who ‘showed solidarity and civil courage when the majority remained silent and followed’. Whether the majority of Hitler’s deserters would have identified in this way is unlikely; most, when confronted by a brutal and eventually unwinnable war, simply chose to save themselves.

Many of the first yakuza members were the burakumin, who were a socioeconomic minority in Japan. Though the name burakumin literally means “people of the village,” these people lived in restricted neighborhoods that were ghettos. They were considered filthy individuals and poorly treated.
In 1603, a new law forced the burakumin out of the cities, and they lost all social rights. Referred to as non-humans, the burakumin found themselves below the four-tiered Japanese feudal social structure.

Once again Ancient Origins has been blocked by Facebook for posting content deemed not fit for general consumption. This is becoming an almost monthly occurrence, with the site being put on hold for the best part of a month each time. In fact, we are not even sure the self-censored image above will make it past the Facebook automated censorship system, but these days it seems we haven’t got much to lose. [Note: Yes, the image above did get us further restrictions]
Here are the latest problem images. Last month, Ancient Origins was put on hold for showing images from an Egyptian papyrus of the process of circumcision in Egypt – warning images of total nudity coming up…

Even after appeal (where one would guess a human might be involved) this image does not pass Facebook community’s nudity or sexual activity rules:
So have Facebook got it right, and Ancient Origins have it wrong? Maybe we need to change our own moderation standards.
